Premium mammography system

, 26 August 2020/in Product News /by 3wmedia

The unique 50 degree 3D HD Breast Tomosynthesis provides the highest depth resolution in tomosynthesis, and thus delivers excellent quality 3D images. Now also biopsies can be performed leveraging this wide tomosynthesis angle. The HD Breast Biopsy solution allows targeting suspicious areas with one click with a +/- 1mm accuracy. The new integrated specimen imaging tool facilitates the immediate control of the biopsy directly at the mammography system. The new Mammomat Revelation also provides automated breast density measurements at the point of examination. This allows for personalized risk stratification and necessary adjunct imaging exams can be triggered before the patient leaves. As soon as the tissue sample has been taken, it has to be X-rayed to confirm that the biopsy was successful. In current settings, samples have to be imaged to a second system or a dedicated specimen scanner, usually in a different room. For this entire time, the patient’s breast has to remain compressed – an uncomfortable or even painful situation that the Mammomat Revelation can substantially reduce. The system has an integrated specimen imaging tool called InSpect. Biopsy samples can be controlled within 20 seconds directly at the system without radiation exposure to the patient, improving the biopsy workflow and shortening the compression time for the patient. In case of high breast density, additional examinations such as tomosynthesis or breast ultrasound might be indicated. Radiologists currently have to visually estimate breast density during the image reading process, which usually takes place after the patient has left. If additional imaging procedures become necessary, the patient has to be called back. Mammomat Revelation is the first mammography system that provides automated breast density measurements at the point of examination. This enables direct, personalized risk stratification and adjunct imaging can be initiated before the patient leaves. Patients get results faster, which also minimizes uncertainty. Purely morphological information from a mammogram or tomosynthesis may sometimes be insufficient for a precise diagnosis. For example, it can be difficult to distinguish scar tissue from new tumours in a post-surgical examination. In addition to purely morphological information, there can be a need for functional information that can be obtained using contrast-enhanced imaging, currently usually performed using breast MRI. Mammomat Revelation now makes functional imaging possible directly on the mammography system. As contrast-enhanced mammography is still not a standard procedure, the modular arrangement of the new system enables it to be expanded to include this to suit customer requirements. With Personalized Soft Compression, the breast compression process is softened and the compression force is automatically and individually adjusted. Coupled with ergonomic SoftComp Paddles, Personalized Soft Compressions allows for better breast positioning, and a more consistent image quality while reducing discomfort.

Purdue researchers develop novel patch to treat melanoma

, 26 August 2020/in Product News /by 3wmedia

Researchers at Purdue University have created a a novel wearable patch to treat melanoma.
Conventional melanoma therapies, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy, suffer from the toxicity and side effects of repeated treatments due to the aggressive and recurrent nature of melanoma cells. Less invasive topical chemo-therapies have emerged as alternatives, but their widespread uses have been hindered by both the painful size of the microneedles and the rapidly dissolving behaviour of polymers used in the treatments. The new patch overcomes these issues.
Chi Hwan Lee, a Purdue assistant professor of biomedical engineering and mechanical engineering, explains: “We developed a novel wearable patch with fully miniaturized needles, enabling unobtrusive drug delivery through the skin for the management of skin cancers .Uniquely, this patch is fully dissolvable by body fluids in a programmable manner such that the patch substrate is dissolved within one minute after the introduction of needles into the skin, followed by gradual dissolution of the silicon needles inside the tissues within several months.”
This gradual slow dissolution of the silicon nanoneedles allows for long-lasting and sustainable delivery of cancer therapeutics. The bioresorbable silicon nanoneedles are built on a thin, flexible and water-soluble medical film. The film serves as a temporary holder that can be conformably interfaced with the soft, curvilinear surface of the skin during the insertion of the nanoneedles, followed by rapid, complete dissolution within a minute.
The surface of the nanoneedles is configured with nanoscale pores and provides a large drug loading capacity comparable to those using conventional microneedles.
The researchers are looking for partners to continue developing their technology. For more information, email: Chi Hwan Lee, lee2270@purdue.edu
Their research is published in ACS Nano. https://pubs.acs.org/doi/full/10.1021/acsnano.0c02343

GE Healthcare launches Edison Developer Program to simplify AI adoption

, 26 August 2020/in Product News /by 3wmedia

GE Healthcare recently launched the Edison Developer Program to accelerate the adoption and impact of intelligent applications and developer services across health systems. The program is based on Edison, GE Healthcare’s secure intelligence platform, and helps healthcare providers gain easier access to market ready algorithms and applications by directly integrating these technologies into existing workflows.
For developers, the Edison Developer Program offers a rich set of healthcare services to help accelerate their ability to build innovations that improve operational and clinical outcomes – and also gives them access to scale and the ability to deploy applications across GE Healthcare’s massive customer base. This program expands the existing Edison ecosystem of leading researchers, technology providers and academic institutions who develop, manage, secure and distribute advanced applications, services and AI algorithms to drive real healthcare outcomes.
GE notes that investment in healthcare startups is exploding – but implementing new innovations effectively can be cumbersome and complex, slowing adoption. For instance, deploying a one-off clinical AI application is currently a manual and disjointed process. The company points out that clinicians are looking for a single solution that can span multiple modalities and seamlessly integrate applications or AI algorithms directly into their existing workflows to harness the power of these technologies.
The Edison Developer Program addresses these needs directly by bringing market-ready AI applications to the Edison platform, integrating them into existing GE Healthcare offerings – on medical devices, in the cloud or at the edge of the network. This deep integration makes it easier for AI and analytics innovators to build, deploy and distribute their offerings. It breaks down barriers to adoption for clinicians, ultimately reducing costs and improving the value of new solutions.
“The opportunities for healthcare with a truly intelligent connected digital enterprise are significant, but no one organization can get there alone,” said Amit Phadnis, Chief Digital Officer, GE Healthcare. “The Edison Developer Program is unique in its deep technology integration and scaling through the workflow, opening the door to faster adoption by health systems. Bringing together leading technology providers, developers and academic institutions under a single, connected ecosystem will help our customers simplify and optimize data aggregation and orchestration of clinical and operational applications in ways that have the potential to create real impact from the bottom line to better patient outcomes.”

Video integration platform for the operating room

, 26 August 2020/in Product News /by 3wmedia

Video integration can help medical staff who need to control and operate an overload of segregated systems and medical devices in today’s operating rooms. That’s why Barco developed Nexxis, a video integration sysstem that builds on the IP network to securely share uncompressed, high-resolution video and audio, from a variety of medical systems, in and between operating rooms. The new generation of uncompressed encoders and decoders makes the platform more connected, flexible and serviceable than before, and also more sustainable.
Nexxis allows for streaming of both HD and 4K signals without downscaling. It uses the best available colour reproduction methods like 4:4:4 chroma subsampling and automatic colour gamut selection (BT.709 or BT.2020) to detect the camera source and configure the display.
This can be done via smart plug and play of devices, with as few components (and hence fewer points of failure) as possible. What’s new is that it now also supports additional connectivity options, such as 4K endoscopes with HDMI 2.0. In addition, the Nexxis adapters are the only AV-over-IP devices on the market that support two dual-channel Full HD inputs. The new adapters are significantly smaller and lighter compared with their predecessors. They can be neatly stacked per three in a single 19” 1RU rack, via cleverly designed mounting brackets. This saves space and reduces cable clutter in technical rooms, as well as facilitating integration.  As with any device in the operating room, compliance with sterilization and safety standards is vital to ensure reliability and patient safety. That’s why every Nexxis component has been classified as a medical device CE/FDA (class II) and is fit for medical use.
In addition, the new highly compact encoders are a perfect fit for mobile applications. Moving trolleys through the operating room requires staff to turn off and turn on the power of the devices on the trolley. The new encoders help ensure a faster start-up.
Barco’s Design for the Environment program focuses on reducing the toxicity of products (RoHS and REACH compliance) and making systems more energy-efficient.
The new Nexxis hardware is 50% more energy-efficient than before. The environmental impact is smaller, thanks to the compact format, lowered heat dissipation and lower power consumption. In addition, Barco aims to further reduce shipping costs and waste by only shipping the power cables that are needed dependent on the region.
