Saving lives, a refrigerator at a time

, 26 August 2020/in Product News /by 3wmedia

Andrea is a Dutch doctor who worked in maternity ward of the Mulago hospital in Kampala, Uganda with about 1500 beds. She is dedicated to improving the healthcare in the neonatal field and helps deliver healthy babies. She told us that she was frustrated, that oxytocin was not readily available to stop post-partum bleeding. The drug was present in the hospital, but it could not be used as it had lost its potency due to lack of reliable cooling. In Mulago, power outages were so severe that refrigerators do not work anymore. Due to the lack of cooling of oxytocin, several mothers died unnecessarily on a weekly basis. Working under these conditions is not why she had become a tropical doctor in the first place. Lack of reliable cooling in the medical field leads to huge losses of insulin, red blood cells, vaccines and lab-reagents.
Coolfinity believes that long power outages and weak power grids should not limit life and opportunities in tropical countries. Cooling is the basic need that is really hampered by ineffective power supply in more than 70 countries in the world. Reliable and sustainable cooling is the catalyst for people in upcoming markets to give their quality of life a boost.
Therefore, Coolfinity has developed a refrigerator, the IceVolt 300, that only needs 6 hours of power to stay cool for 24 hours to preserve the medication in the cold chain. The refrigerator is specifically designed to maintain a stable 5 degrees Celsius cooling, in line with the WHO requirements. The refrigerator works very effectively under harsh tropical conditions (35 degrees Celsius). And if the cooler is unplugged, it will even run for 2 days without power. Because of Coolfinity’s technology, the need for a back-up power generator is even eliminated.
With this unique and innovative refrigerator Coolfinity will save costly medication and precious lives worldwide, where it is needed most.

Breast CT scanner uses spiral CT technology

, 26 August 2020/in Product News /by 3wmedia

According to the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, some 69,000 women in Germany are diagnosed with breast cancer every year, with almost 18,000 dying of the disease. Conventional diagnostic methods, while well established, are not always reliable. 3D imaging with high isotropic resolution, on the other hand, offers clear advantages.  Nu:view, the world’s first breast CT scanner to use spiral CT technology, is the brainchild of Erlangen-based company AB-CT. With the CE marking for nu:view in place, the new scanner is already in use on patients at the University Hospital Zurich (USZ). What sets nu:view apart is the very high image resolution coupled with low radiation dose and short scan times. To obtain the best possible image quality and maximize radiation dose efficiency at the same time, the detector uses state-of-the-art single photon counting technology. Unlike conventional scintillation, nu:view uses detectors made of cadmium telluride (CdTe), transforming every X-ray photon directly into an electric pulse. In a single rotation around the female breast, 2,000 projection images are created, with a full scan taking as little as seven to 12 seconds – at very low radiation levels without breast compression, ensuring excellent patient comfort. For the first time, a CT scanner makes it possible to acquire an image of the entire female breast in a single scan in true 3D, imaging both the soft tissue and the calcifications. Compared with mammography, the three dimensional, non-superimposed images make it far easier to detect micro-calcifications. This non-compressive method also means less discomfort for the patient and reduces the number of additional ultrasound image.

Premium mammography system

, 26 August 2020/in Product News /by 3wmedia

The unique 50 degree 3D HD Breast Tomosynthesis provides the highest depth resolution in tomosynthesis, and thus delivers excellent quality 3D images. Now also biopsies can be performed leveraging this wide tomosynthesis angle. The HD Breast Biopsy solution allows targeting suspicious areas with one click with a +/- 1mm accuracy. The new integrated specimen imaging tool facilitates the immediate control of the biopsy directly at the mammography system. The new Mammomat Revelation also provides automated breast density measurements at the point of examination. This allows for personalized risk stratification and necessary adjunct imaging exams can be triggered before the patient leaves. As soon as the tissue sample has been taken, it has to be X-rayed to confirm that the biopsy was successful. In current settings, samples have to be imaged to a second system or a dedicated specimen scanner, usually in a different room. For this entire time, the patient’s breast has to remain compressed – an uncomfortable or even painful situation that the Mammomat Revelation can substantially reduce. The system has an integrated specimen imaging tool called InSpect. Biopsy samples can be controlled within 20 seconds directly at the system without radiation exposure to the patient, improving the biopsy workflow and shortening the compression time for the patient. In case of high breast density, additional examinations such as tomosynthesis or breast ultrasound might be indicated. Radiologists currently have to visually estimate breast density during the image reading process, which usually takes place after the patient has left. If additional imaging procedures become necessary, the patient has to be called back. Mammomat Revelation is the first mammography system that provides automated breast density measurements at the point of examination. This enables direct, personalized risk stratification and adjunct imaging can be initiated before the patient leaves. Patients get results faster, which also minimizes uncertainty. Purely morphological information from a mammogram or tomosynthesis may sometimes be insufficient for a precise diagnosis. For example, it can be difficult to distinguish scar tissue from new tumours in a post-surgical examination. In addition to purely morphological information, there can be a need for functional information that can be obtained using contrast-enhanced imaging, currently usually performed using breast MRI. Mammomat Revelation now makes functional imaging possible directly on the mammography system. As contrast-enhanced mammography is still not a standard procedure, the modular arrangement of the new system enables it to be expanded to include this to suit customer requirements. With Personalized Soft Compression, the breast compression process is softened and the compression force is automatically and individually adjusted. Coupled with ergonomic SoftComp Paddles, Personalized Soft Compressions allows for better breast positioning, and a more consistent image quality while reducing discomfort.
