MRI can cut overdiagnoses in prostate-cancer screening by half

Most countries have not introduced nationwide prostate-cancer screening, as current methods result in overdiagnoses and excessive and unnecessary biopsies. A new study by researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden, which is published in The New England Journal of Medicine, indicates that screening by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and targeted biopsies could potentially cut overdiagnoses by […]

PROSCOPE project aims to spot colon cancer early with the ‘Google Earth of colonoscopies’

A novel approach combining conventional white light with advanced photonics and optical imaging could help save up to 80,000 lives by helping doctors detect bowel cancer in the early stages.

Bone mineral density decreases less than expected after menopause

Bone mineral density at the femoral neck bone in postmenopausal women decreased by an average of 10% during a 25-year follow-up, according to a new study from the University of Eastern Finland. Being the world’s hitherto longest follow-up of changes in bone mineral density in postmenopausal women, the study shows that bone loss after menopause […]

Researchers develop AI tool to improve precision in breast cancer diagnosis

Researchers at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have developed an AI-based tool that improves the diagnosis of breast cancer tumours and the ability to predict the risk of recurrence. The greater diagnostic precision can lead to more personalised treatment for the large group of breast cancer patients with intermediate risk tumours. The results are published in […]

BRIDGES project aims to predict breast cancer risk

Clinical data obtained from 120,000 people will help women across Europe assess their lifetime risk of developing breast cancer. The BRIDGES project used this data to develop a tool able to combine various risk factors into a single risk-score. Peter Devilee, coordinator of the project on behalf of the Leiden Univerasity Medical Center (LUMC), discusses […]

AI and genomic surveillance combine to detect infectious disease outbreaks

By Nathan Langer/UPMC By coupling machine learning with whole genome sequencing, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Carnegie Mellon University scientists greatly improved the quick detection of infectious disease outbreaks within a hospital setting over traditional methods for tracking outbreaks.

New AI technique reveals we don’t know half of what’s in our cells

Most human diseases can be traced to malfunctioning parts of a cell – a tumour is able to grow because a gene wasn’t accurately translated into a particular protein or a metabolic disease arises because mitochondria aren’t firing properly, for example. But to understand what parts of a cell can go wrong in a disease, […]
