Paragon 28 introduces intramedullary nail system for fibular fracture repair

Paragon 28, Inc. has launched the Phantom® Fibula Nail System, offering a less invasive approach to fibular fracture treatment in ankle injuries. The system, designed to provide an alternative to traditional plate and screw fixation, purportedly addresses some of the complications associated with external fixation methods.

Improved patient outcomes

Research suggests that intramedullary fixation for distal fibular fractures may lead to fewer soft tissue complications, reduced implant removals, and lower rates of fracture nonunion compared to plate and screw fixation. The Phantom system aims to capitalise on these potential benefits through its innovative design features.

Technical specifications

The system comprises instrumentation to facilitate anatomic reduction and proper implant placement. Key components include:

  • Entry K-Wire Guide for accurate starting point identification
  • Curved Reamer Guide to direct nail implantation angle
  • Intraoperative traction capability for fracture reduction
  • Screws that thread into the nail
  • Expandable proximal locking mechanism

Syndesmotic fixation can be achieved through the nail using various Paragon 28 implant options, including the recently introduced R3FLEX and R3ACT Stabilisation Systems.

Surgical perspective

Dr Charles Moon, a surgeon involved in the system’s design, commented on its features: “The novel instruments designed to provide a reproducible starting point and the ability to pull traction for fracture alignment add measurable value to surgeons and lead to better outcomes for patients. The threaded distal screws and user-friendly proximal locking option help optimise stability, which is vital to fracture healing.”

The Phantom Fibula Nail System is delivered in a single surgical tray with sterile-packed implants, potentially simplifying surgical workflow and inventory management. It joins Paragon 28’s existing foot and ankle fracture portfolio, which includes various plating systems and external fixation options.
