Owen Mumford extends EcoSafe safety syringe platform
Medical device manufacturer Owen Mumford has expanded its EcoSafe 1ml safety syringe platform with a companion reusable autoinjector, creating an integrated drug delivery system designed to improve patient accessibility whilst reducing environmental impact.
The platform pairs the established EcoSafe safety syringe (formerly UniSafe) with a reusable autoinjector component, addressing administration challenges for patients with dexterity limitations or needle phobia.
Integrated approach to patient self-administration
The EcoSafe platform responds to growing demand for intuitive self-administration systems that alleviate pressure on healthcare services. The safety syringe features passive needle shielding, a spring-free design, and 5g disposable weight, enabling safe independent administration for most patient populations. However, sensitive patient groups facing cognitive, physical, or emotional barriers often require clinic visits for injections, increasing non-adherence risk and healthcare costs.
The reusable autoinjector functions as a “wrap-around solution”, with the safety syringe serving as the cartridge component. This design extends usability to patients requiring additional support without generating excessive plastic waste or carbon emissions associated with fully disposable autoinjectors.
Environmental impact assessment
A peer-reviewed ISO Life Cycle Analysis conducted by Pré Consulting evaluated the reusable autoinjector’s environmental impact from manufacture to disposal. The assessment confirmed substantial reductions in carbon footprint and plastic waste over time, with environmental benefits increasing proportionally to device usage frequency.
