Revolutionary design addresses key surgical challenges

The patent-pending HandMe Galaxy II Retractor represents a significant advancement in hand surgical instrumentation, functioning simultaneously as a lead hand, retractor, and suture replacement. Its innovative design creates a stable surgical field without requiring additional personnel or instruments, potentially reducing procedural costs while improving ergonomics for surgeons.

The device incorporates specialized finger hats with dimpled surfaces that securely position digits without restricting blood flow. Low-profile hooks arranged around the base frame provide gentle yet precise tissue retraction, minimizing trauma while maximizing surgical site visibility.

UK innovation supporting global surgical expertise

“As an inventor, there is nothing more rewarding than being able to create devices that make surgery safer and easier,” said Angela Spang, founder and owner of JUNE Medical. “It is an honour to be trusted to assist surgeons in over 40 countries as they perform miracles on a daily basis, and I am delighted to add a solution especially designed for hand surgery to the award-winning Galaxy II range.”

The UK-designed and manufactured technology addresses essential needs in hand surgery, where precise positioning and retraction are crucial. Carlos Heras-Palou, consultant hand and wrist surgeon at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre, Derby, emphasized this point: “Hand surgery is intricate and delicate; good positioning of the hand and retraction during surgery is not a luxury, it is essential.”

Sustainable manufacturing addresses environmental concerns

Beyond its clinical benefits, the HandMe Galaxy II Retractor is manufactured from strong, resilient, and recyclable materials, reflecting growing attention to environmental sustainability in medical device production. This approach aligns with broader industry efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of surgical procedures without compromising patient outcomes.

Meeting international demand for specialized instrumentation

The international launch begins at the South West Association for Surgery of the Hand annual meeting in the UK on 7 March 2025, followed by its European debut at Mallorca Hand 2025, the Joint Congress of the Spanish Society for Surgery of the Hand (SECMA) and the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) from 23-25 April, before global release.

With over 250,000 hand surgeries performed annually in the UK alone, the demand for specialized instrumentation continues to grow. Heras-Palou noted that “continued innovation is high on the agenda for hand surgeons both here and abroad,” highlighting the importance of ongoing technological advancement in this field.

The HandMe Galaxy II Retractor is adaptable for both paediatric and adult patients, making it suitable for a wide range of complex hand procedures across different clinical settings.
