GE HealthCare launches Carevance patient monitor with cardiac output insights
GE HealthCare has secured CE mark approval for Carevance, a patient monitoring system designed to address acute care challenges through validated clinical algorithms and an integrated cardiac output monitoring capability. The device introduces non-invasive hemodynamic assessment tools aimed at perioperative and intensive care environments facing resource constraints and increasing patient complexity.
Non-invasive cardiac output monitoring
The system’s Cardiac Output Insights feature represents the primary clinical innovation, combining algorithmic analysis with visual decision support to enable hemodynamic monitoring without additional hardware or invasive catheterisation. Clinicians can activate the single-click feature to access graphical representations of real-time patient data, facilitating assessment of hemodynamic stability during surgical procedures and recovery periods.
“There is a need to make cardiac output monitoring more accessible, so clinicians have the information they need to understand the underlying mechanisms of hemodynamic instability and make informed therapeutic decisions,” said Dr Frédéric Michard, founder and managing director of MiCo Sàrl, a consulting firm that has provided services to GE HealthCare.
Hemodynamic instability during and following surgery correlates with extended hospitalisation and serious postoperative complications, including organ failure and increased mortality risk, according to published clinical consensus statements.
Clinical validation and alarm management
Carevance incorporates clinically validated measurements across vital signs including oxygen saturation, electrocardiogram and respiration rate. The device employs the EK-Pro algorithm, which the manufacturer reports can reduce false ECG alarms by up to 92%, addressing alert fatigue in clinical settings.
The monitoring platform builds on GE HealthCare’s existing acute care technologies, designed to provide scalable parameter monitoring across diverse hospital environments. Neal Sandy, general manager of Monitoring Solutions at GE HealthCare, noted: “Carevance brings together reliable clinical parameters, proven acute care workflows and continuous cardiac output monitoring capability – empowering clinicians with real-time insights to support confident decision-making across acute care areas.”
Portfolio integration and market positioning
The device expands GE HealthCare’s modular monitoring portfolio alongside the Carescape system, targeting hospitals requiring cost-effective solutions without compromising clinical measurement accuracy. The company’s monitoring technologies have received iF Design Awards, including a Gold Award for Portrait Mobile in 2022 and recognition for Carescape Canvas in 2023.
The system’s enhanced intra-hospital transport workflow and real-time data capabilities are positioned to support clinical teams managing patient transfers across acute care departments.
