Intuitive Surgical, maker of Da Vinci surgical robots, expands European footprint with strategic distributor acquisition

Robotic surgery pioneer Intuitive Surgical is set to strengthen its European presence through the acquisition of key distribution businesses across Southern Europe, marking a significant development in the medical technology sector’s regional consolidation.

The NASDAQ-listed company has announced plans to establish direct operations in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Malta, and San Marino through the acquisition of current distributors ab medica, Abex, and Excelencia Robotica. The transaction, subject to regulatory approvals, is scheduled for completion in 2026 and will integrate these businesses into Intuitive’s European commercial organisation.

Market positioning and operational integration

Under the leadership of Senior Vice President and General Manager Dirk Barten, the acquisition will incorporate the da Vinci and Ion distribution operations into Intuitive’s European framework. The strategic move aims to enhance customer relationships and expand access to minimally invasive surgical technologies across these territories.

Historical significance in European robotics

The acquisition particularly noteworthy given ab medica’s pioneering role in establishing robotic-assisted surgery in Southern Europe. As one of the first da Vinci distributors globally, the company has played a crucial role in developing the market over two decades. CEO Francesca Cerruti reflected on this legacy, noting their commitment to healthcare innovation and highlighting their evolution into providers of smart and digital health solutions.

Technology portfolio implications

The agreement encompasses both the da Vinci surgical system and the Ion endoluminal system distribution rights. These technologies represent key platforms in minimally invasive surgery and diagnostic procedures:

The da Vinci system provides surgeons with high-definition 3D vision and sophisticated robotic instrumentation, facilitating precise surgical procedures through minimally invasive approaches. The Ion endoluminal system offers advanced navigation capabilities for pulmonary tract procedures, including fiducial marker placement.

Market development strategy

Intuitive CEO Gary Guthart emphasised the strategic importance of understanding localised healthcare needs: “Having a direct presence in these territories allows us to deepen our understanding of unique customer needs in these countries.” This approach aligns with the company’s broader strategy of enhancing patient access to minimally invasive surgical options.
