LivsMed has developed the world’s first 90° double-jointed articulating vessel sealer, set to transform minimally invasive surgical procedures. The ArtiSeal™ Vessel Sealing System enables perpendicular tissue sealing with potential benefits for seal integrity and surgical precision in challenging anatomical locations.

The ArtiSeal™ Vessel Sealing System will make its debut at the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) conference in Long Beach, California beginning 12 March. This innovative device represents a significant advancement in laparoscopic surgical instrumentation, addressing long-standing limitations in vessel sealing technology.

According to Dr Jung Joo Lee, LivsMed Inc. founder and CEO, “ArtiSeal – as the world’s first 90° double-jointed articulating vessel sealer – will give surgeons unprecedented access to targeted vessels and tissue bundles and the ability to achieve a true perpendicular seal.”

This perpendicular orientation is not merely a matter of convenience. Pre-existing research suggests that perpendicular seals on tissue bundles may provide superior burst pressure resistance compared to the angled seals typically achieved with conventional straight vessel sealers.

The ArtiSeal system is indicated for both minimally invasive and open general procedures, specifically designed for use on arteries and tissue bundles up to and including 7mm in size.

Its advanced engineering incorporates several critical features that work in concert to enable perpendicular sealing: 90° articulation of the instrument’s end effector, a double-jointed jaw, integrated locking mechanism, and radiofrequency (RF) energy delivery. The end effector articulation synchronises with the surgeon’s natural wrist and hand movements through an ergonomic grip design.

The system utilises an advanced bipolar energy delivery mechanism, confining energy between the instrument’s jaws to minimise thermal spread to surrounding tissues. This feature is particularly valuable when operating in anatomically challenging regions where precision is paramount. The dedicated RF generator includes software upgradeability for ongoing safety enhancements.

ArtiSeal joins LivsMed’s existing ArtiSential™ line of single-use laparoscopic instruments, which have gained recognition for providing robotic-like precision without the associated high costs. The ArtiSential instruments feature similar double-jointed end effectors that enable multi-angle approaches with a comprehensive range of motion.

A key advantage of these instruments is their capacity to overcome the limitations of traditional “straight stick” laparoscopic tools, particularly in accessing difficult anatomical structures. Additionally, they maintain tactile feedback, allowing surgeons to precisely gauge tissue resistance – a critical advantage over fully robotic systems.

Dr Lee emphasised that “the launch of ArtiSeal is another example of LivsMed’s commitment on delivering disruptive technologies to a market that has lacked major laparoscopic surgical advances in recent years.”

LivsMed has developed the world’s first 90° double-jointed articulating vessel sealer, set to transform minimally invasive surgical procedures.
